Anyone Else Freak Out at the Thought of Painting the Woodwork?

It is just the thought of covering up that beautiful wood. And knowing that it would take A LOT of work to undo it if I ever were to decide to. Seems so permanent. Such a BIG commitment! HOWEVER. I have seen some gorgeous rooms lately with painted door frames and baseboards and they look so put together and wonderful! I love and long for the look of it! Yet I am pretty sure I lack the courage. What is your take on painting the woodwork? Done it and loved it? Done it and regretted it? Eeeek! :)

By the way, I bought a gallon of paint today! It is called Dark Toast. Yummy name, eh? I swear, pictures are coming soon and I will do before and afters. Currently, I took a paint brush and painted a few splotches here and there to get a feel for and decide if I loved the color before I paint the entire thing. Do other people do this too? Hubby seemed to think it was odd! :) I am not sure it is as dark as I want for the little living room, but I think it may be perfect for the laundry room! I know, a brown laundry room?!?!?! Weird-O! I just really have a thing for brown earthy tones! Pictures. I promise!

  2. Oh good...I am not the only one who loves brown! :) The brown and blue sounds divine. I saw some curtains the other day in those colors and loved them! More than likely I'll be leaving the woodwork alone. I just don't think I have it in me!

  3. Those dark colors can be really beautiful. I know that chocolates have been very popular for a while now.

If anyone had ever told me they had a black room I would have been horrified, but I was shown the room of a friend last week and she had painted her walls black. I've never seen anything like it.

Her room was tastefully jungle themed. Not too over the top, but the walls were black with paper borders of gold scrollwork, the rugs were animal prints, it worked.

That is so not my style, but it was very well done and I was impressed. All that to say, dark colors, when done well, can look stunning, even when really unusual.

I can't live in dark colors, makes me feel down, so brights are the way I go. But if you feel good in them, I'd do searches on designs in Google Images and see if you can get inspiration for your earthy brown tendencies. I bet you will do great!

  4. ah yes--i love browns--but my house is too small to do anything but the light tans

most people i know test a patch on the wall :)

    and the woodwork
    like you--i'm a chicken
i will only paint over really bad woodwork that would never be nice fixed up
plus--i never like paint over wood as much it seems
my exception is wood paneling...i love that stuff painted :)

tonia's baby blue and dark brown sounds very pretty--i love browns paired with other colors

  5. Tb...the majority of my walls are paneling that I painted when we moved it! The exception is the big living room...the paneling in hereis real wood and I actually like it, it is a gorgeous color. Now, the bathrooms? They both had *gasp* black & grey paneling. It was horrifying! Both are tan now, but I am thinking of painting them too. Faith...the black/gold/animal theme does sound pretty, but not my cup of tea either. I would love to do something bright in the kitchen, mud room, and dining room...but those are the walls with barn wood. I do like the look, even thought it is dark, so I try to do colorful accents. For some reason the browns juse seem cozy. Maybe I am craving them because it is fall and winter is coming! :)

  6. (Shoot--I just lost my post!) ;-)

The house I live in is 1964, modern colonial "development" style home and has always had painted woodwork. Probably the woodwork is pine, but it has never been bare. I am probably going to live with painted woodwork forever. It can be a nice accent to a room or just a blah afterthought. We have both types here.

  7. It took 4 years to get brave enough to paint my paneling in the living room. I then went all out and painted my cabinets black. The Paneling is Cashmere White. I even painted the front of the dishwasher to blend in with the cabinets. Looks so much better!
I'm reading now how to paint my counter tops until I can afford new ones.
    I think I've become a paint junkie.

  8. not really a fan of painted woodwork if you have real wood trim jennifer. the wood seems to hold up to kids and animals better. the paint seems to get marred up easier and has to be touched up frequently. or maybe my group is just hard on things:) love all your other ideas though:)

  9. Susan...oh, me too! Paint ideas are just flowing! Do share about painting your counter tops! I would LOVE to do that! I have been looking into painting ceramic tiles too...would love to get rid of the stupid cheesy cow tiles in the kitchen! And instead of dying the vertical blinds, I was reading yesterday about paintig them and I think I am going that route too! :)

Leslie, I think I agree that the wood holds up better. Yes, ours take a lot of wear & tear too and considering the age of the house, they have held up very nicely. I think I'd regret painting them.

  10. Hiya Jennifer, sorry to post so late, I'm just now trying to get caught up on blogging!

ALL of my woodwork in my old house is painted, except the bathroom. It's that wonderful old grand molding too, and it was painted when we got here. The thought of stripping it was just too much...

I adore the look of brown walls and warm white crisp woodwork. Seems so clean to me. Paints are very durable....it's a tough call, only you know what's right for you.....

    Can't wait to see pics.
