Wal-Mart is Now Selling Caskets and Urns....

Just when I think I have seen it all. I absolutely did NOT see this one coming! Wal-Mart? Caskets? Urns? Yes, it is true. I think a major line has been crossed here. I think someone needs to put a stop to it. I swear, one day Wal-Mart will take over the world. And we'll be forced as a society to wear those blue vests to show our loyalty, or be shot. ;)

I'll admit, I shop there ALL the time. All the time. Several times a week in fact. They are a lot cheaper in so many aspects. And convenient too. But today I am seriously considering not shopping there ever again. That would be a total life challenge as well as having an huge impact on our budget. Understand what I mean when I say they will take over the world?

This may be one of those times that I have to put my personal interests aside and do what I think is in the best interest of the world at large. Maybe that sounds completely silly, but really, where does one draw the line?!?! Wal-Mart? Caskets? Urns? Anyone else think that is totally "off"?

  1. i dtest walmart jennifer and very, very rarely do i go there. only as a last stop and then sometimes i prefer to just wait till we make a trip to our next biggest town where more store options. they came here in the 80's and now we don't have really any small stores to speak of other that goodwill, a scrap book store, and some craft crap (ie; as in china made stuff made to look primitive). our walmart has even phased out all fabrics and crafty things after running our small fabric and craft stores out of business. i think they are a monopoly and i understand about the cost part of things too. believe me! it is harder to not shop there financially, but... we all gotta do what we gotta do what we feel is right!
it is not uncommon in other countries though, for there to be stores devoted to funeral things hon. i think the funeral home industry way overcharges for alot of things and puts undo burdens on folks, but still, i hate walmart!

  2. Leslie, I am going for cremation, a cardboard box, and then being sprinkled out on the back 40. :) In the meantime, I now love and hate Wal-Mart all at the same time! The question is, can I live without it? When we got our Wal-Mart super center, our favorite local grocery that had been in business forever, shut down. They had the best meat counter. Our ALDIs shut down too. Our wally world still has crafts and fabrics, and I have speant a lot of time there, but I was told by our local Wal-Mart that the reason they are phasing them out is because Wal-Mart is planning to open a separate fabric/craft store chain. That wouldn't surprise me!

  3. I shop there very, very rarely. It wasn't as hard for me to switch as I thought. I do all of our grocery shopping at the local Spartan store now. Many people have asked me how I can shop there since it is "so expensive". I buy 90% of my groceries on sale and stock up so it doesn't bother me. I actually like it better because they have good sales. Wal-mart's normal prices are lower but they never get as low of the sale price at the other store.

I buy other stuff during planned trips the to "city". I'm not too proud to ask friends and relatives to pick things up for me when they go either. Good luck. :)

  4. I had not heard about wally world selling caskets and urns. Wow, that is very hard to believe... We do shop at wal mart sometimes, but my husband really hates the store. I buy my groceries at the commissary, my arts and crafts supplies at michaels or hancock fabric and most of our clothes at ross. LOVE that store! I have started shopping at thrift stores for other things and I order some things online. If I can, I try to buy things locally.
About the caskets though, I keep telling my husband I want the cheapest "box" available and I want to be cremated. Fertilizer for the tomatoes... He doesn't think this is nearly as funny as I do...

  5. I have a love/hate relationship with Walmart too Jennifer. There is something I like about the 'one stop' shopping, but at what cost? It phases all the little places out, it all becomes so impersonal. When I'm home in Indiana, I RARELY go to Walmart, cause I call it 'DUMPmart', the one nearest my house is really crappy. When I'm down here in Missouri (like now) I'm at Walmart constantly. They are all so nice...and big....and clean.

    We need an intervention. :-)
