I Guess I Didn't Pay Enough Attention.....
Because we just planted 42 pepper plants and 55 tomato plants. I knew I grew quite a few, but I didn't realize I had that many! We just took a lunch break and now are headed back out to plant the melon seedlings and the rest of the seeds. It is gorgeous out today! I hope you are having a wonderful day too!

oh my!! guess you'll have to sell at farmer's market this year--or make a lot of stuffed peppers and salsa :)
ReplyDeleteWay to go! That ought to supply you with a lot of food. I haven't counted mine yet but I'm hoping for a lot too. Next year I will have to buy another light, one just isn't going to cut it. Are you covering your seedlings with anything as you plant them out? I've seen a lot of people around here with milk jugs over their seedlings but I didn't think far enough ahead to save jugs. I'd like to get mine outside but I'm nervous about frost!
ReplyDeleteWOW I am so envious! I hope all of theem do wonderful. Are you going to can them? I don't know about you but I would use every tomato from that many plants. Very Very cool. Happy Mothers Day to you too!!
ReplyDeletetbsomeday and sweetheartsmom...my tomato plan is to can pizza and spaghetti sauces. And some salsa too. The peppers are to can too...we eat a lot of soup in the winter and one of our favorites I use a jar of peppers and juice in.
ReplyDeleteJena, I think we are safe from frost now, I haven't put anything on them. And the first round of tomato plants are HUGE (I need to take a picture) and a lot have blooms. My second batch was all Romas and they are smaller, but good size. I am sure I will be sick of seeing tomatoes come late summer!! :)
I hope you'll post later on when you start making tomato sauce. Last year I made six quarts and it took all the tomatoes I had, and I thought I had a lot of tomatoes. Some people have told me that I cooked it down too much but it was still quite runny. I guess it is common to just can stewed tomatoes and use them like that but I want real, ready to go sauce.
ReplyDeleteJena, I will defeintely post about it. How many tomato plants did you plant last year? I did read that it takes a lot of pounds of tomatoes to make sauce. Watch me end up with only a few out jars from a zillion tomatoes. :) LOL This will be my first year making and canning sauces. I did buy a ball canning recipe book. Not to mention I have only water bath canned apple butter...should make for an interesting time! :) Am I warped for looking forward to it? I am even looking forward to sweet corn time again...last year was my first year and it was a straight 16 hours of hard work from field to freezer. But man, so worth it everytime we get a bag out!
ReplyDeleteThe Ball book is a great one for canning. I used the tomato sauce recipe in there that allows you to water bath it. Some recipes you're supposed to pressure can but that one has the right amount of acidity or whatever so you don't have to. I was a little leery about it but the sauce has kept well for me.
ReplyDeleteI think I planted about 20 tomato plants last year. They did really well but they started to get some weird bug or something towards the end. I suspected tomato worms but never could find anything. Anyway, I picked them all and spread them on a blanket in our spare bedroom to ripen. That worked pretty well.
I'm excited for canning season too, it is a very satisfying time of year! Especially this year since I have a few friends who really want to help and learn, that will make it more fun.
