Ok, first I borrowed this picture from the net when I did a search to identify what in the heck the mushroom fungus thingies growing in our basement are. That is what ours looks like. I have never seen such a thing in my life! I have to say, I am grossed out. I decided we should tackle the basement chaos. When I say chaos, I am not exaggerating. It is a disaster area. There are generations of crap down there. Not mass quantities of crap, but what is there is rotting and rusting away. Now I am wishing we had started with the attic instead. Alright, I am headed back down there....if you never hear from me again, know it was probably the fungusy mold that got me. Or a spider. Lots of them down there too. Or maybe it was just a spider's web that got me...plenty of them that I can see myself getting twisted and trapped in forever.
I may have to take a bath in bleach tonight.
Oh, one more gross thing while I am thinking about it. When I dumped the Dirty Diva's pool water yesterday to clean it and refill...there was a dead bird lurking in the water. Gaaaarrrrooooosssseeeee!
I guess no one ever said farm life was pretty. :)

Oh, and I have to add that I may never look at pasta the same again. It has an eerie resemblence. Gag.
ReplyDeleteAnd one more addition...the dead bird in the pool was NOT one of the Divas.
ReplyDeleteglad you added the additions...i was wondering about the ducks
ReplyDeleteok...so, GROSS!! i'm with ya!
that mushroom is like nothing i've seen or hope to see...seems alive...how bad is it for your health? (i wouldn't be totally surprised to find one around here some day)
are you bleaching the basement...how are you killing the stuff
maybe you should wear a mask
oh and the dumping the pool thing was a bad surprise...i know how dirty ducks are...so there's no telling what's in that water ahead of time
ugh
sorry for the bad day
i cleaned cat poop up from the winter out of a barn today
what kind of farm cats just poop inside b/c it's cold out
GROSS
the fun things we do in out in the beautiful country :)
Yuck!
ReplyDeleteA sharp blow with a spade and a gallon of bleach, followed by days of a fan blowing on that corner.
Oh, and don't go to bed without a weapon under your pillow.
....They always come back...

That fungus is nasty looking for sure. And how strange with the dead bird in the ducks pool. You sure have had a bizarre day. Hope the rest of your weekend is better. :)
ReplyDeleteFaith...LOL :) Yes, everything I have read says that they come back! The dirty little beggars. I was surprised at how many people talked about having them in their bathrooms! I did read that hydrogen peroxide might be a little more effective than bleach. I had hubby pick up a giant bottle of bleach while he was in town, but now I am thinking of getting some liquid color safebleach to use instead since it has hydrogen peroxide in it. Maybe I'll use both. :) LOL
ReplyDeleteTbsomeday...I am sure the entire basement is a health hazard! :) And it makes the house smell funky when the AC is on. Gross. I plan on wearing a mask when I sweep and scrub. The basement probably hasn't been cleaned in 40 years. And it is damp. And when we were down there for the last tornado warning we noticed that the main drain out of the house was leaking and stinky. And there is a little closed off room that used to be a coal room...the dryer vent runs through it and at some point came undone and there is a 5 inch layer of dryer lint all over in there. ~sigh~ After we get it all cleaned up I am going to have the ducts professionally cleaned. Oh yes...cat poop! They like to do their business under the carport. I put gravel down thinking it would deter them....nope. They go in the gravel and scoot it around to cover!
Well, good luck with the basement cleaning. I feel your pain. We had some electrical work done awhile back. When the guy came to give us an estimate he suggested that we "clear a path" for him in the basement. Instead, we spent most of a day and cleaned the whole thing. We threw out a whole trailer full of junk but things look much better now. Like you said, now I have to tackle the attic. Our house is around 100 years old and I think everyone that ever lived here left things behind. Curse them and Brian's Grandma who painted all the wood with 10 different colors of paint!!
ReplyDeleteHave fun!
Oh, I have to share this too. You guys think you have it bad with cats pooping outside and cleaning your basement...our cat poops in our basement. Not in a litter box like a good kitty either. In the old cistern in the corner. Every once in awhile hubby braves it, goes in with a shovel, and cleans it all up. Surprisingly it doesn't have much of a smell but it is still really, really gross.
ReplyDeleteOh! Don't you know what this means! This means you have created a PERFECT environment to start your own indoor mushroom farm! lol.
ReplyDeleteSeriously though, as soon as you get that crap cleared out - think about it.
Jena...oh, the cats! Question...what exactly is a cistern? Good for Brian for being brave!! :) LOL
ReplyDeleteMBM...you might just have a point there. Too bad I cannot stand mushrooms...I might be more inclined to give it serious thought. ;) LOL My oldest D loves them...and she wants a job...maybe she could grow and sell them. Hmmmm...
Oh for the love, that is FREAKY! I don't know what I'd do if I saw something like growing in my basement, but the state of my basement (sounds alot like yours) I wouldn't be too surprised! We actually have a frog living down there. Gotta love an old house. We have the same 'basement' smell that you talk about when the air conditioner is running. Every winter I hope to conquer it, but it never happens.
ReplyDeleteDid you get it out yet?
Jayme...Hi! How was camping in the squirrel? :)We got everything out of the basement, including the shrooms, and that is as far as we have gotten. Been busy with other stuff and I am NOT looking forward it. Next step is to knock down all the spider webs and then sweep and shovel (yes, I think it is going to require a shovel to get all the dirt and dead bugs out!) and then scrub and bleach. Ugh.
